Personal Tax Account and Mortgages

With news from Halifax and Nationwide that house prices are starting to drop inevitably some are seeing this as the perfect opportunity to buy. With that in mind we thought now would be a timely reminder of a service that HMRC offers called the Personal Tax Account (PTA).

As a self employed individual, mortgage brokers will often ask for an SA302 from HMRC as part of the documentation needed to prove earnings. If you have a PTA you will be able to down load your SA302s immediately. As your Agents, the service offered by HMRC online does not include the ability to access SA302s. Instead, we need to call HMRC and it can take up to two weeks to arrive.

Once registered, you are able to access all the information that HMRC holds on you, in one place. You will also be able to update information such as address details and check on your State Pension status.

To begin the set up process please follow

To register you will need a Government Gateway account and your National Insurance number.

The main services that are currently offered which may be of interest are:

  • find out what your Unique Taxpayer Reference (UTR) is for Self Assessment
  • read your secure messages which tell you what you might need to do in Self Assessment
  • view or print your Self Assessment tax calculation (known as the SA302)
  • make an appeal against a Self Assessment late filing penalty
  • notify HMRC if you stop being self employed
  • view your Annual Tax Summary
  • find out how much State Pension you could get (this amount is also known as your State Pension forecast), when you can get it, and how to increase it, if you can
  • check your National Insurance record to see if you have any gaps in your National Insurance records
  • stop a claim to Child Benefit when your child leaves full time non-advanced education or training
  • opt out of Child Benefit if you or your partner do not want to incur the High Income Child Benefit Charge
